Performer Patricia Routledge, best known for embodying the character Hyacinth Bucket in the beloved TV sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has passed away at the 96 years old, as confirmed by.

She also starred in Alan Bennett's TV monologues and played BBC One's amateur sleuth Hetty Wainthropp Investigates.

"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Patricia Routledge, who passed away peacefully in her sleep today with loved ones near."

"At the remarkable age of 96, her love for performing and for connecting with live audiences never waned, just as new generations have continued to find her through her cherished screen performances."

The announcement noted: "Her absence will be deeply felt by her inner circle and by her devoted admirers worldwide."

Decades of Performance

Dame Patricia was best known as Hyacinth Bucket - who insisted it be said "bouquet" - a humorous character who embodied the extremes of English pretension and snobbery.

"She is a wonderfully awful character and I had great fun with the role enormously," the performer remarked.

This classic sitcom was broadcast from the early 1990s, and a year later she was voted the UK's favorite actress at the BBC anniversary ceremony.

Beyond television, she received recognition on stage as well as screen after launching her acting journey in the theater in the mid-20th century.

With performances in the West End, she built a reputation in the America when she won the Tony for outstanding actress in a musical on New York theater for the musical Darling of the Day in 1968.

She was as adept at serious drama as she was at song-and-dance and humor - she appeared in Shakespeare's histories at the prestigious theater company, then received an Laurence Olivier Award for outstanding musical performance for the production Candide in the 1980s decade.

The 1980s also saw her become a true national TV star - landing appearances by comedian Victoria Wood in her comedy series, and writer Alan Bennett in multiple solo performances, including her Bafta-nominated role, for which she was given a Bafta nomination.

She received additional Bafta nods, for her Hyacinth role, in 1992 and 1993, then starred in the main character as a senior citizen on a journey into detective work in BBC One's Hetty Wainthropp Investigates between the late 1990s.

She received an OBE in 1993, a CBE in 2004, and a dame in 2017.
