{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences near miss with Formula 1 track officials
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson revealed he came dangerously close to a life-threatening accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals ran across the track immediately ahead of his car
The dangerous situation occurred on the third rotation when track officials were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an quick visit to the pits to change his compromised front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"
"I rejoined with a new set of hards, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two guys running across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, frankly, it was so dangerous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Clearly there's been a communication breakdown somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We fail to grasp how on a ongoing race track marshals can be permitted to just run across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"
Governing Body Reviewing
Formula 1's governing body, the global motorsport federation, is currently investigating the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" commented the regulatory authority
"In the third rotation, marshals were alerted and put on alert to access the circuit and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send personnel were rescinded and a double yellow flag was raised in that zone"
"The examination is ongoing what happened following that moment"
