James Comey court appearance
The former director has stated his non-guilt regarding the charges

Former FBI head James Comey has denied the charges to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

The former director's lawyer filed the plea representing him in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

His attorney announced he would seek to have the proceedings dismissed for various reasons including that his the accused, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was formally accused shortly after Donald Trump pushed his chief prosecutor to take action against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald told the judge they intended to submit various legal requests to dismiss the case before a trial, arguing the prosecution was vindictive and that a US attorney was unlawfully assigned to handle the case.

James Comey's legal matter was first overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under scrutiny from the former president after his examination into another rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to file indictments.

Courtroom Atmosphere

The former director came across in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the court on Wednesday, chatting with his legal team and sharing humor. He was joined by his spouse, Mrs Failor and child Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the previous administration dismissed.

After listening to the court recite his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in court on Wednesday, the defendant was asked if he understood the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the proceedings.

Previous Events

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was fired about a few months into Donald Trump's first administration as national leader. At the period, Mr Comey was directing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, Mr Comey sparked a backlash from the Democratic party when he stated just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, causing negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.

Current Allegations

Government attorneys assert Mr Comey provided false information to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he misled the legislative body by saying he had not approved someone at the FBI to leak to journalistic entities data about the agency probes.

Prosecutors also allege the defendant of "wrongfully trying to influence, hinder and delay" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media Mr Comey shared to his online platform after he was accused, he stated he was wrongly accused and charged the former president of acting like a "dictator".

"My family and I have understood for years that there are costs to opposing the former president," he commented. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a court case."

The charges against Mr Comey surfaced after the former president posted on social media calling for his top legal official, the attorney general, take legal action against James Comey and others.
